Houston-area author inspires kids to dream big through literacy with his book

HOUSTON – A new chapter is beginning for many students in our region as they return to school. New adventures await them in the books they will read.

A local author who hopes to inspire children in the black and brown community to dream big with her book ‘The Train’.

“Well, I guess I’ll go to sleep now…” read Shynikia Means, author of ‘The Train’. “The Train is about this girl who goes on an adventure on a train, and she goes to different places; she’s under water, she’s crossing the moon, she’s going to the north pole to get ice.

Means reflects on her childhood for inspiration.

“We had to move into the projects (as a kid) and living in the projects was totally different from where I used to live. There were times when our lights went out, and there were times when my mom wouldn’t eat, when I think about it, she used to make puppets on the wall and give me an imagination. Means said.

The author and her mother said she didn’t let the trauma define who she was, but rather defined it by changing the narrative.

“A lot of kids didn’t get that because they didn’t have that mommy or that daddy, or the presence of a positive person, to give them imagination.” Said means.

According to Data USA, only 6% of authors and writers are black.

“I was like we didn’t have as many performances, and what I was going through, it makes sense for people to look like him to write a book.” Means explained.

“The Train” is now available on Amazon.
