DETROIT – Michigan has its own little Rockefeller Center and it’s now all lit up for the holiday season. Santa flipped the switch, lighting up 20,000 LEDs on the majestic Christmas tree in the heart of downtown Detroit.

The Norway Spruce grown in Cadillac, Mich. Is 65 feet tall, the tallest Christmas tree ever to be erected in Campus Martius Park. It dominates the ice rink and overlooks the holiday markets. Now, downtown Detroit is one of the most festive places for the holiday season.

“This is an iconic vacation setting located in the middle of the Detroit skyline. This whole environment is truly unmatched across the country, ”David Cowan, head of public spaces for the Downtown Detroit Partnership, told MLive.

Yesterday evening, thousands of people gathered downtown for the 18th annual Tree Lighting event, which featured food trucks, famous singers including Thornetta Davis and ‘The Voice’ winner Cam Anthony, the Olympic skater. Ashley Wagner and, of course, Santa Claus.

“This is one of the tallest trees I have ever lit,” Santa Claus told MLive. “It was wonderful. I have a tickle inside. The one at the North Pole, it’s bigger and bigger, but this one comes close.

The Campus Martius ice rink is now open every day until March. You can skate during the day or at night surrounded by Christmas lights and skyscrapers.

The outdoor holiday market, which has about 20 local businesses, is open Wednesday through Sunday just across Cadillac Square.
