Summer in the northern hemisphere is only a few days old, but the extremes keep piling up. The conditions behind these events (heat, warming oceans, long-standing weather changes) are not going away anytime soon, which means the worst may be yet to come.

While forecasters have known for weeks that this summer was going to be brutal, it did nothing to dampen the shock as records and losses mount. “The loss of ice in this area allows the ocean to absorb additional heat during the summer, which is released into the atmosphere during the fall and winter,” Francis said in an interview in March. “This extra heat is what strengthens the ridge that feeds the drought.”

In 11 western states, more than 98% of the land is unusually dry and drought has set in over 93%, according to the US Drought Monitor. Conditions are so dry that the threat of wildfires has arrived in many places a month earlier, said Gina Palma, a forecaster with the US Department of Agriculture in June.

The threat is expected to be above normal from the Pacific Northwest to the Rocky Mountains in the east and Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada in California in July, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Solar-powered lunar rovers will help scientists search for lunar ice

Scientists have long tested solar power in space, but it could soon arrive on the Moon – in the form of rovers equipped with solar panels. On unmanned lunar missions, these tiny robotic vehicles will test the limits of how humans fuel their explorations, navigate the moon’s surface, and create potential human habitats far from home.

The team behind them includes Mike Provenzano, director of planetary mobility for Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic. Under a contract with NASA, the robotics company has scheduled unmanned missions to the moon with the rover in tow for next year. The first mission, Peregrine 1, is scheduled for the end of 2021.

A light but powerful Rover

The lunar night presents perhaps the biggest obstacle for rovers and panels. Navigation presents another headache, as rovers can’t rely on Google Maps or GPS like we do on Earth journeys. During landing, the lander’s cameras will take a series of photos to create a high-resolution map of the area surrounding the site where it lands. Once deployed, the rover will take its own photos for easy orientation. Then, software using stereo vision and visual odometry (the process of determining position and orientation by analyzing images from the camera) will create local maps that correlate with the high-resolution ones from the lander.

This navigation technique is somewhat similar to that of the ancient Polynesians, who compared the movements of ocean currents and stars. The team will also track the position of the sun, adds Corpa de la Fuente, and they will project laser patterns on the surface in order to build 3D surface maps.

Once on the moon, the rover needs enough juice to venture out of the lander. This is why Astrobotic is developing a contactless docking station with WiBotic, a company specializing in industrial and underwater wireless charging. With smart docking software, a rover can locate a charging concentrator on its own and, once in range, start charging.

Radar signals originally interpreted as liquid water were found in an area of ​​Mars known as the South Pole layered deposits, named for the alternating layers of water ice, dry ice ( frozen carbon) and dust that has been deposited there for millions of years. By broadcasting radio waves to the surface, scientists can observe beneath these icy layers and map them in detail. Radio waves lose energy as they pass through materials in the subsoil; when reflected back to the spacecraft, they usually have a weaker signal. But in some cases the signals returning from the subsoil of this region were brighter than those from the surface. Some scientists have interpreted these signals to imply the presence of liquid water, which strongly reflects radio waves.

Plaut and Aditya Khuller, a doctoral student at Arizona State University who worked on the paper during his internship at JPL, are not sure what the signals point to. Areas believed to contain liquid water extend for about 10 to 20 kilometers (6 to 12 miles) in a relatively small region of the Martian South Pole. Khuller and Plaut extended the search for similar powerful radio signals to 44,000 measurements spread over 15 years of MARSIS data over the entire Martian south polar region.

Unexpected “lakes”

Analysis revealed dozens of additional light radar reflections over a much wider surface and depth range than ever before. In some places, they were less than a mile from the surface, where temperatures are estimated to be minus 81 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 63 degrees Celsius) – so cold that the water would be frozen, even though it contained salty minerals called perchlorates, which can lower the freezing point of water.

Khüller rated an article from 2019 in which the researchers calculated the heat required to melt underground ice in this region, finding that only recent volcanism below the surface could explain the potential presence of liquid water below the South Pole.

“They found that it would take double the estimated Martian geothermal heat flow to keep this water liquid,” Khuller said. “One of the possible ways to get this amount of heat is through volcanism. However, we haven’t really seen strong evidence of recent volcanism at the South Pole, so it seems unlikely that volcanic activity will allow underground liquid water to be present throughout this region. “

What explains the brilliant reflections if it is not liquid water? The authors cannot say for sure. But their article offers scientists a detailed map of the region that contains clues to the climatic history of Mars, including the role of water in its various forms.

“Our mapping brings us a few steps closer to understanding both the extent and the cause of these confusing radar reflections,” Plaut said.
