Two hikers die, 14 stranded at Lahaul-Spiti glacier


The Lahaul-Spiti district administration took action to rescue 14 hikers, who were reportedly trapped on the Khemenger Glacier in the high mountain valley.

Two hikers died due to extreme cold conditions and rough terrain.

Deputy Commissioner Lahaul Spiti Neeraj Kumar said a team of 32 had been assembled and dispatched to the glacier side with the appropriate equipment, medicines and items needed to rescue those trapped. They also include carriers. The team will take three days to reach the glacier.

“Today we received reports that two hikers died on the glacier, while 14 people are stranded in the area. Efforts were made to rescue those stranded using helicopter service today, but were unsuccessful, ”Kumar said.

This was basically a group of the Indian Mountaineering Federation in Kolkata, which was on an expedition to the Khemenger Glacier in the Spiti region.

Kumar said a team from the military, Dogra and ITBP scouts, and medics were dispatched to lead the rescue operation.

The deceased victims have been identified as Bhaskar Dev Mukhopadhyay, 61, and Sandeep Kumar Thakurata, 38, according to an official statement.
